Daily card #82!
It is time to get excited for Halloween. Not TOO excited, just excited enough...
The past few days I've really resolved to start following advice for running a creative business, as some of you have noticed.
And then WHAM! I was hit with news about impending copyright legislation. From what I understand, the re-write of copyright law could make it very expensive to maintain our copyrights!
Currently, we just have to put something into a tangible form and TADAAA we own the copyright. The new law would pressure us to pay to register every single work of art, and if we don't it would leave our paintings in danger of being claimed as orphan works, which could then be modified slightly and registered by other entities as their work.
I think orphan works exist now, but this would broaden the scope of what counts as an orphan work, and what could be done with them. Previous orphan work legislation has been fought tooth and nail by illustrators because it could be so harmful.
For more information go here or here.
We only have until the 24th to send in letters explaining how, for visual artists, the new legislation would create a burden.
I know some people are not worried, because they think their work is obviously not orphaned. However, think of how often we see posts on imgur, tumblr, and other sites that say, "Welllll.....I couldn't find the original artist, so..."
